3 lambs have been stolen in the last few days from farmland on Station Road Moira.

 

The lambs are ear tagged and one is a Bleu Du Maine breed distinctive because of the blue colouring on its face.

 

This particular lamb is a twin and the thieves left the other sibling behind. The other two lambs though not Bleu Du Maine breed are similar in colouring.

 

The lambs are also marked with red.

 

 

Over the last few months there have been a number of sheep thefts in the District. If you noted any one loading lambs into a vehicle in the vicinity of Station Road Moira please contact police with details.

Tool Thefts

 

Further to the last CSN message thieves also broke into a property at Chestnut Hill Road Aghalee where they stole several chainsaws and a powerwasher. The break-in is believed to have occurred between 27 and 28 May.

Two properties were broken into on the Lany Road Hillsborough overnight. The thieves forced entry to outbuildings at one property and stole gardening machinery.

Attempted Burglary
 Damage was caused by criminals attempting to break into a Golf Shop at Ballyskeagh Road Lambeg between 1am and 2am this morning. The thieves made of after activating the alarm. This is the second occasion in a few weeks that this property has been broken into.

 Stolen Digger

 

Around 6am this morning a lorry with a light coloured cab and low loader stole a digger from a site at Beechwood Avenue Moira.

 

The vehicle is believed to have made off in the direction of the Moira Roundabout or possibly headed towards Hillsborough. The vehicle is also described as using orange hazard lights.

 

The digger itself is mostly yellow in colour with a faded green coloured cab. The model is a YANMAR V105 with rubber tracks and has "A.G.Wilson" on the boom and body.

 

Any sightings of vehicles matching the description should be reported to police.

Telephone / On-Line Scams

 

Police are warning the public to be vigilant following recent reports of fraudsters attempting to gain bank details by using 'vishing' and 'phishing' scam methods.

Organised criminals and individual fraudsters are continually developing ever more sophisticated tactics to target business and personal bank customers. Focussed phone (known as vishing attacks) and email (known as phishing attacks) tactics are used to try and trick users into giving them their customer log-in and payment authorisation details.

 

The fraudsters use a process of ‘Social Engineering’, which put simply can be described as ‘Grooming’ their victims in order to make them comply with their requests.  They say they represent the bank or another well known company and have already garnered some information about the company or individual. During the course of a phone call or email, they elicit enough information to take control of the online banking. The people behind this are organised and knowledgeable both about systems and the companies they claim to represent, as well as the people that they victimise.

You as the customer are the first and best line of defence against this kind of fraud. It is vital that each individual is aware of online security threats, can spot attempted fraud and take steps to avoid this.

Always remember that:

1. Legitimate companies and banks will NEVER ask for your full PIN and password online.

2. Legitimate companies and banks will NEVER telephone you to ask for your banking PIN and password. Telephone calls asking for these details will not be from the bank or company, therefore the person calling is likely to be a fraudster.

Any unsolicited communication or contact from your bank or another company should be checked. Please contact the bank or company in the event that you are approached by phone. Try and use a separate phone from the one that you have been contacted on as the fraudsters can hold open your phone line and trick you into believing that you are contacting your bank.

DO NOT disclose account details or access arrangements with anyone from the bank unless you have contacted them directly.

If you have been approached or have fallen victim to this type of scam you are advised to report this to the bank or company immediately and report the matter to your local police station on 0845 600 8000. Scam Telephone Calls

 

We are all aware of the spates of telephone scams operating over recent years and to which CSN is always reiterating in regards to online and banking security.

 

A member of CSN was telephoned in the last day or two by persons purporting to be from BT and offering assistance in improving online activity by increasing internet speed.

 

This involved the caller requesting that the customer switch on their computer and access a nominated website.

 

Our member describes the caller as having an Asian accent and was very convincing particularly in them being able to identify that the member was a BT internet customer and relevant telephone details.

 

Only a prompt check by the member with BT highlighted that this was not a genuine caller.

 

Following this scam artist’s instruction it is believed the member would have had their computer “locked out” and a fee would have had to have been paid to regain access.

 

The member emphasised how convincing the caller was thereby making the elderly and vulnerable in particular easy targets for such activity.

 

As with any “cold caller” some may be genuine, however no-one should be contacting you to gain access to your computer and online or banking details unless YOU have initiated any enquiry, complaint or call.

 

ALWAYS ensure that YOU carry out checks on those calling you to ensure the legitimacy of the call using published and official contact details for the company named.

There have been a number of fuel thefts from plant machinery on sites in the Hillsborough / Dromara areas in recent weeks.

 

Please be wary of any suspicious activity notably in new build developments or properties where plant machinery are remaining on site overnight and do not hesitate to notify police or the contractor of any details, particularly relating to vehicles, descriptions or registrations

Rogue Traders / Rural Thefts

 

 

There have been a number of rural break-ins over the last couple of weeks and reports of persons calling at houses offering tools for sale.

 

Please be reminded of securing property when out and to be wary of cold callers offering items for sale. These may well be genuine but no doubt any goods sold to you may prove difficult to replace / refund if faulty given the nature of the sale / sellers involved. Buyer beware!

 

Again be aware of elderly and vulnerable neighbours and family who may fall to pressure selling.

 

There have also been reports of callers seeking scrap metal.

 

Activity has been reported in the Drumbo and Saintfield Road Lisburn area where a white van with registration similar to FXZ3412 and occupants have been offering generators and power saws for sale.

There continues to be thefts of building plant, trailers and agricultural plant.

 

Again contractors and farmers are requested to ensure that when not in use these machines are properly secured and any suspicious activity should be reported and any details of suspicious vehicles or persons involved.

 

Also retain details such as model and chassis numbers and distinctive features which are vital if police recover or stop suspected stolen vehicles or plant.

Police were contacted in relation to 4 males and a female who were going door to door asking people for bank account details and other personal information this date at around 2.10pm in the Claremont Drive, Moira area.

The persons involved stated they were collecting for some sort of child cruelty group. Only useful description is of the female - around 20 years in age with brown hair which was long and tied back. She was wearing a waterproof jacket with jeans and trainers which had orange stripes on them. One of the males was descriped as being large and stout. They also carried small laptops - possibly ipads.

A green and yellow John Deere 6920 Tractor and a red and yellow Hay Buster straw machine were stolen from a farm on Dromore Road, Dromara overnight.

 There have been a number of high value farming machinery thefts over the last two weeks in the Lisburn area.

 The tractor registration is SK05DHJ and is valued at around £33k whilst the Haybuster is valued at £43k and is the only one of its kind in Ireland.

 The incident is believed to have occurred between 3am and 6am this morning. The vehicle may have been driven in the direction of the Gallbog Road Kinallen.

Between 20th and 21st August a JCB Digger was stolen from property on the Ballykine Road Ballynahinch.

 

This was an old JCB back hoe digger. There are no details relating to the vehicle other than it is yellow has a cracked windscreen and may have been on the Cluntagh or Ballynahinch Road the evening of the 21st. This digger may have come to your notice because of its age.

A property at Saintsbury Avenue Lisburn was burgled between 930 - 1030am yesterday morning. A silver VW Golf with a southern registration 03D75173 was sighted in the area.

Suspicious Vehicle

 

A red van was reported in the vicinity of Gulf Lane, Hillsborough on 11/09/13. The van has been described as having very badly faded paintwork. The van was noted being parked in the driveway of a property under building work but was not known to the contractor.

A white Mercedes Hi-Top van with registration similar to LFZ2890 was reported in the vicinity of Leverogue Road, Lisburn around 230pm yesterday.

 

It had one male occupant with a southern Irish accent who was evasive when challenged by the property owner and immediately left.

A white VW Transporter van registration similar to OHZ6295 was also in the vicinity of Chestnut Hall Avenue Moira yesterday. Two young men with southern Irish accents were described as touting for business.

 

No offences disclosed but again please be aware of Bogus Callers and Rogue Traders particularly if they are calling at the homes of elderly and vulnerable residents.

At around 430am yesterday morning a blue coloured New Holland tractor and sprayer were stolen from the Braniel Road / Tullyard Road area of Lisburn / Drumbo.

 

The model is a New Holland 6070 and was bearing the registration ONZ8348 and alone is worth approximately £47k.

 

The vehicle may have made its way to the Anahilt / Kinallen area.

Missing dog - request from Mark

Our wee yorkie dog Bailey went missing today at about 4.30 at the newforge road area of Maralin. along with six other people I have spent the last five hours looking for him, but the guy who lives in the house next to the field has cameras showing a man flagging down cars outside his house for a few minutes at 4.40, which is beside the only exit from the field. bailey is a yorkshire terrier, and was just back from the groomers. he has a very short black coat with length at his sides and face. he has tan colouring marks at his face. he has a blue collar, is licensed and microchipped and has also a silver tag with his name, our home phone number and postcode although this might not be the easiest to read. if anyone know anyone on the newforge road today at this time or anyone who has found a dog please contact me ASAP. 02838327633 or 07841013015 or pm me on here. thanks.

‘Thingy’ app is a new free Smartphone app designed for young people by young people.

 

Jointly funded by Carrickfergus PSNI Neighbourhood Policing Team and the Youth Justice Agency the app was conceived, planned and designed by a group of teenagers from Genesis Youth club in Whitehead together with a number of youths currently engaged with the Youth Justice Agency. It contains a wealth of information relevant to young adults from alcohol and drug awareness, to sexual health and crime.

 

Constable Shaun Fraser, Carrickfergus NPT said; “The app is one of a kind and a source of loads of useful information unique to Northern Ireland and particularly the local area.   

From conception, everything about ‘Thingy’ has been driven by the young people; the content formed out of what they knew would be useful for them in their everyday lives. They even came up with name! 

For many teenagers it can be difficult to know where to turn for help or advice when they find themselves in challenging circumstances. Often they are frightened to ask for guidance on issues like drugs or alcohol for fear they'll get into trouble and as a consequence they can sometimes end up making uninformed and unsafe choices.  

 

The 'Thingy' app contains a wealth of information on a range of issues teenagers face as well as a host of names, numbers and links to local agencies and services that can help with any number of problems or concerns.”

 

Ben Rayot, Youth Justice Agency commented; “’Thingy’ is an exciting and innovative new initiative which has given our young people an opportunity to undertake positive work for the overall benefit of their communities. The fact that it has been developed by young people for young people means that it addresses the real issues and concerns faced by young people and will help them access vital support services at the very time they need that support. Indeed in extreme circumstances where a young person may be feeling severely depressed or suicidal, it could prove to be a life-saver.”

 

Ricky Linton, Genesis Youth Club added; “Working on the app has been really fulfilling for the young people involved. It has shown them that they are capable of accomplishing great things. Each young person involved in the development of ‘Thingy’ app will also receive a Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award for their efforts.”

 

Constable Fraser added, “It is important that our teenagers feel empowered regarding their own safety and that we equip them with the tools to make positive life decisions. The ‘Thingy’ App enables our young people to get informed on any issue they face. It’s totally free and can be accessed anytime, anywhere on their Smartphone or tablet.”

If you are about to do a spring clean here is some advice to help prevent the chances of having your identity stolen through your personal documentation and information. Feel free to display on notices boards, newsletters etc to help raise awareness.

Identity Theft

Identity theft is when criminals get hold of your personal details and use them to open bank accounts, get credit cards, loans or state benefits in your name.

To stop identity theft you need to:

• Burn or shred all old documents, including any bank or credit card statements, passports, driving licences and household bills.
• Check your statements carefully and report any unusual transactions immediately.
• Immediately report a lost or stolen passport, driving licence or credit card to the organisation that issued it.
• Get a copy of your personal credit report from one of the major credit reference agencies. This will help you to find out if someone else is applying for credit in your name.
• If you move house, inform your bank, credit card companies and all other agencies with which you do business.
  • Royal Mail has a redirection service, which you may consider using to ensure your post arrives at your new address.
  • However, if you suspect your mail is being stolen then contact the Royal Mail Customer Enquiry line: 08457 740 740.
• Never give personal or account details to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly, either by phone, post, email or in person.
• If you use the internet then always use a different password for each account. Do not use family names or dates of birth as passwords, as these can be easily guessed.
• If you receive an email requesting your personal banking details, contact the banking industry to make sure it is not a scam.

Stay Safe Online

Only send your personal details to secure websites starting with ‘https’ in your web browser address bar, instead of the usual ‘http’.  Secure websites will also have a padlock sign, which is usually displayed in the bottom right of your web browser.

Never give out your security details.  Emails asking for your password or PIN could be from criminals ‘phishing’ for your details.

Sometimes fraudsters can redirect you from a genuine website to their fake, lookalike site to ‘pharm’ (capture) your details.  Check the address bar in your web browser and only send your details to secure sites that you know are genuine.

Home and Personal Security

We are urging homeowners to protect their properties following several "creeper" burglaries across the district recently.
A creeper burglary is when thieves enter your home to steal valuables, including the keys to your car.

The following points will help protect your home. They are:
• Double lock with a key, front and back doors. Just lifting the handle up from the inside is not sufficient as the burglars can pop them open. The doors have to be locked with a key.
• Do not leave house/car keys in an area visible from the front door/letterbox, which could be fished out through the letterbox
• Do not leave house/car keys in an obvious place, such as by the front door, on kitchen worktops, in a key box. Put them elsewhere
•When you go to bed at night activite your alarm and zone it so the downstairs is alarmed if possible.
• Do not leave any valuables in the car
• If applicable, ensure that any tracking devices are activated on the vehicle
• Report any suspicious activity/persons/other vehicles around your vehicle or a neighbour who has a valuable car
• When going away for any length of time, ensure that your vehicle/house is checked by a neighbour, hide the keys, or disable the vehicle/put an obstacle in front of it.

The above vehicle (possibly a Toyota Landcruiser) was reported calling at a premises yesterday in the Mullaghcarton Road area of Lisburn.

It had a male person on board attempting to sell shed painting services which the resident did not want and is certain this is the same individual who has now called before over the past few years and was reported for being abusive when asked to leave .

The registration, first part showed a Dublin registry with possibly three numbers following this. When the resident took a photo of him he also started taking pictures of their premises before being told to leave.

This male has ginger hair and is of a heavy build and had a young person in the passenger seat with him.

No offences disclosed at this time but please be aware of suspicious callers / rogue traders.

Theft / Break-in

Two barns on the Creevytenant Road, Ballynahinch were broken into over the period 17-18 April and a red 50cc quad bike and two compressors (red SIP & white Axminster) stolen.

A yard on the Saintfield Road Lisburn was entered overnight Wednesday / Thursday and a ride on lawnmower with other items was stolen.

Locks had been cut off the doors and a rotavator and a Husqvarna Model 175 orange coloured mower taken.

A shed in Mourneview Crescent Lisburn was also broken into overnight Wednesday / Thursday and a number of items stolen including a Flymo lawnmower, Black & Decker strimmer, Flymo leaf blower, Karcher pressure washer and two expensive bike - a black and white Canondale valued at around £1600 and a Kona mountain bike in black / yellow / red colours valued at approximately £700.

Burglary

At approximately 330pm yesterday afternoon the resident of a property in Sycamore Road, Dundrod disturbed two males stealing property from the house on returning home.
Entry had been forced to the property via a rear window.
The two males made off in a white cab style van with a blue pick-up body. The vehicle made off in the direction of Belfast. No other details on the vehicle are known.

The thieves are described as :

1. 26 years approximately, thin build, 5'8" tall with jet black hair wearing a mustard coloured top

2. 15 years old approximately, thin build, 5'6", blonde hair and wearing a blue and red hooded top

Stolen from Leathemstown Road, Dundrod some time over the Easter weekend. The vehicle was taken from the grounds of McKinney Primary School after the thieves cut chains to the gates.

I'm sure by now most of you have seen the posts on facebook regarding a man in a white transit van with southern registration plates. They are apparently selling saucepans from the back of the van but are actually looking to steal dogs to sell on or use for bait. Over the past few days we have been made aware of sightings in the Ballymoney and Aghadowey areas. Earlier today as we were leaving the kennels we spotted a suspicious white Ford Transit in a small side road just opposite Benvardin Kennels, set back off the junction with a man inside who saw us going past. The van had southern plates on it. Within a few minutes we returned to where he had parked up but the van had vanished, we tried a lot of the back roads looking for the van but no luck. We went straight to Coleraine PSNI station who took all details and confirmed that they have had numerous reports and are indeed looking for this van, a police car in the area was then sent to look for the van but had no luck. The PSNI think the man may have been doing surveillance on the Kennels during daylight hours with the intentions of returning at a later time. If you see a white Transit van acting suspiciously or anything out of the ordinary then please report the vehicle registration to your local PSNI station. Please make sure at all times that your dog is safe and secure. Dog theft is now happening all too often, so warn your friends and family to be extra vigilant and please share this.
